October 16, 2008 We won! The CPUC votes 5 to 0 to reverse course and adopt an overlay in the 760 area code instead of the 442/760 split they had previously mandated. Thanks to your letters, motivating the efforts of Assemblyman Martin Garrick and his staff, the near-impossible has been achieved. September 30, 2008 The Bakersfield Californian reports that Kern County Supervisors voted to oppose the overlay. And the Desert Dispatch tells us that Barstow's state senator is also fighting the overlay. September 25, 2008 Growing opposition to the overlay, which threatens adoption of the CPUC's Proposed Decision, is described by the North County Times. September 23, 2008 Keep760.com receives an urgent call from Assemblyman Martin Garrick, asking us all for a renewed show of support in favor of the overlay. Victory is still possible, but opposition to the CPUC's Proposed Decision granting an overlay is growing, threatening the unprecedented progress we've made. Garrick asks that new "Keep 760" emails be sent. September 18, 2008 Assemblyman Martin Garrick leads a delegation of North County representatives to appear before the CPUC at their San Francisco meeting. The delegation includes Garrick, Col. James Seaton of USMC Camp Pendleton, David Nydegger of Mira Costa College, Lee Sterling of the San Diego County Association of Realtors and Graeme Jarvis of John Deere Water Technologies. At the end of their appearance, CPUC President Michael R. Peevey tells them, "We obviously are reconsidering this matter. Without judging outcomes, we can clearly say we're doing that." September 17, 2008 "Hold the phone" says the San Diego Union-Tribune. September 16, 2008 The CPUC issues a Proposed Decision, reversing its 442 Split in favor of an overlay for 760. Their final decision is scheduled to be made on October 16. Sending another "Keep 760" email to the CPUC commissioners, urging them to vote in favor of the Proposed Decision, will help keep our cause alive until the vote. August 26, 2008 The San Diego Union-Tribune puts the new public meetings to Keep 760 on its front page. KGTV News 10 and Fox 5 San Diego air stories about events leading to the new Keep 760 meeting in Carlsbad. August 25, 2008 As a direct result of your "Keep 760" emails, the California Public Utilities Commission has decided to hold two new public participation meetings on its decision to split the 442 area code from 760 in north San Diego County! News about the new chance to save 760 travels fast in the North County Times. August 19, 2008 An editorial in the North County Times faults the CPUC's flawed public notification process. August 15, 2008 A Petition for Modification and a Stay asking that the 442 Split decision be postponed until it is re-evaluated are filed with the CPUC by David Wright Tremaine LLP on behalf of Assemblyman Martin Garrick and the Chambers of Commerce of Carlsbad, Encinitas, Escondido, Oceanside, San Marcos and Vista. July 9, 2008 The North County Times reports on the letter sent to the CPUC by our elected representatives, who were spurred by nearly 4000 "Keep 760" emails. July 6, 2008 The lead editorial in the July 6 North County Times says the inclusion of cell phones in the 442 Split adds more fuel to the "Code War": "Cell phone inclusion adds to 760 fight-- OUR VIEW: Speak up, speak loud to stop switch to 442." "This issue is only a done deal if we let it be so," the editorial states. "In the spirit of this Fourth of July holiday weekend, use your rights as a free people: Speak out, speak loud, speak often." July 2, 2008 Now they tell us! Cell phones will switch to 442 also, as reported in this North County Times article that also mentions Keep760.org's efforts. June 30, 2008 An urgent letter to the CPUC, Governor Schwarzenegger and his chief of staff has been drafted by Keep760.org. It is circulated among San Diego County's elected representatives for their signatures. The letter asks that the 442 Split decision be postponed, then reconsidered. June 25, 2008Supervisor Horn's Chief of Staff, Joan Wonsley, calls to say that Supervisor Horn supports Keep760.org's efforts. She offers to help draft and promote a letter to the CPUC and Governor Schwarzenegger that would be signed by all affected Supervisors, Assemblymembers and Senators-- the letter would ask the Governor and CPUC to delay implementation of the 442 Split until the decision can be reconsidered. June 14, 2008 Over 1300 "Keep 760" emails have been sent so far, exceeding the total number of comments collected by the CPUC during their little-publicized February 2007 community forums. June 4, 2008 Keep760.org poster and flyer artwork can now be downloaded for printing and neighborhood distribution. May 30, 2008 The Keep760.org website goes online and, through word-of-mouth, the first "Keep 760" emails are sent to our elected representatives and the CPUC. April 24, 2008 With very little advance notice or informed input from the public, the CPUC votes to remove a significant portion of San Diego County from the 760 area code. We won! | |
